In 2006, the Asociación Cometas de Esperanza, in collaboration with the Barceló Foundation, started the project “Niños Buzo”.

“Niño Buzo” is anyone who makes a living by rummaging through the rubbish of a landfill, in this case Rafey’s, in the suburbs of the Mosca neighborhood of Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest Dominican city.

The Barceló Foundation has held its 2nd Child and Youth Painting Contest, focusing on the Felanitx legends of “Na Maria Enganxa” and “Es Macolí del Gegant”.

The contest was aimed at 5th and 6th graders of Primary and Secondary Education (ESO) from public, private and concerted centers in the region of Migjorn (Felanitx, Santanyí, Llucmajor, Campos and Ses Salines).This second edition has been a great success.

The awards ceremony took place on May 21st, 2017, at Barceló Foundation´s  Art and Culture Center in Felanitx. The jury was composed by Xisco Duarte (Felanitx culture councilor), Maria Antonia Pons (Art Bendix), Miguel Sebastián (artist) and Pilar Pujol (Art Director of the Barceló Foundation) who decided that the three winners were:

1st Prize – Elena Donadel Almodóvar.

2nd Prize – Tarik Chkrouni.

3rd Prize – Mª Dolors Veny Barceló

The selected works have been exhibited to the public this weekend at the Foundation’s headquarters in Felanitx.

With this activity, the Barceló Foundation aims not only to promote the art and creativity of the youngest, but also to prmote the ethnographic heritage that we have in the Balearic Islands.
