The Vidanta Foundation awards the third prize to the educational center, funded by the Barceló Foundation, for its contribution to poverty reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean.
For more than 12 years Cometas de Esperanza Association together with the Barceló Foundation, started the project “Children Diver”, to ensure the schooling of 300 high-risk youth who residing in the Rafey landfill in Santiago de los Caballeros.
Currently, Cometas de Esperanza centre, located in the neighborhood of La Mosca, houses 380 students who study kindergarten and primary school and it has a very professional teaching team. It has received two consecutive years the Gold Award for Educational Quality from the Ministry of Education of the country and education minister Andrew has acknowledged that it is “a role model”.
This time was the Vidanta Foundation, in collaboration with the Organization of American States and the General Secretariat of American States who wanted to highlight his work in combating child exploitation.
The award was collected by Oscar Faes, president of Cometas de Esperanza Association, Andrea Suero, current Director of the school and Gustavo Jiménez, representing the Barceló Foundation.
In addition, the latest diagnostic evaluation report of the Dominican Ministry of Education, made among more than 7.000 schools to measure the level of elementary school students (in Spanish language and Math subjects) concludes that the educational quality of Cometas de Esperanza Centre is above the national average.
